If you’re looking for a new quality and compact crossover, you might want to take a good look at the 2019 Kia Niro and the 2019 Kia Sportage. Both of these great crossovers have approximately the same starting MSRP. However, the 2019 Kia Niro offers a hybrid engine while the Kia Sportage sticks with its well-known gasoline and diesel options. So which of these crossovers is what you’re looking for?

Starting MSRP

Both of these crossovers have around the same starting MSRP, but which of these crossovers is cheaper? The 2019 Kia Niro is the less expensive of the two with a starting MSRP of about $23,490 to $32,250 for its higher-end models. The 2019 Kia Sportage, however, starts at approximately $23,750 and about $34,600 for the higher tier model. When you consider the price of these two crossovers compared to the rest of the crossover market, the price is quite reasonable.

Performance and Fuel Efficiency

When it comes to the Kia Niro and the Kia Sportage the most significant difference is the engine offered in both of these crossovers. The 2019 Kia Niro has a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder hybrid engine that produces 139 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm and 195 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The Niro also offers an estimated 51 miles per gallon in the city and 46 miles per gallon on the highway.

The 2019 Kia Sportage definitely has more power under the hood offering a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated inline 4-cylinder gas engine that gives out 181 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 175 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm. This engine package offers an estimated 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. Alongside the 2.4-liter engine, the Sportage also offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder gas engine. This engine package produces 240 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque @ 1,450 rpm. This turbocharged engine, however, has a lower average MPG coming in at 21 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway.

The 2019 Kia Niro is significantly smaller than the 2019 Kia Sportage, making cargo space quite a bit smaller in the Kia Niro. The Kia Niro has approximately 19.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 3rd row and 54.5 cubic feet behind the 2nd row making a nice compact crossover. The Kia Sportage, however, being the larger of these two crossovers comes in at around 30.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 3rd row and 60.1 cubic feet behind the 2nd row, making the Kia Sportage quite more roomy than the Niro.

So which of these crossovers is best for you? Whereas the 2019 Kia Niro may not be the roomiest crossover compared to the 2019 Kia Sportage, the Kia Niro is still quite more fuel efficient than the Kia Sportage.
