Performance

Most 2018 Optima trims are powered by a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which produces 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and is joined with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The LX 1.6T is unique because it goes with a smaller, 1.6-liter turbo I4 instead (thus its name). This engine produces 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, and it is glued to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The top-of-the-line SX trim gets the most powerful workhorse, which is a 2.0-liter turbo I4 with 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It is also the only one with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for greater control over gear shifting.

Interior and Features

A five-seater, the 2018 Kia Optima starts with comfort and convenience features such as six-speaker audio, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, a USB port and audio jack for connecting mobile devices, a 3.5-inch TFT LCD meter display, and remote keyless entry. New for 2019 are a 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ for smartphone integration. Upper-level trims are more likely to have additions or enhancements such as leather upholstery, power adjustability and power lumbar support on the driver’s seat, front-seat heating ability, an integrated memory system for the driver’s seat, dual charging-only USB ports, a 4.3-inch TFT color LCD display (in place of the 3.5-inch), a smart key system with push-button engine start (an upgrade of the remote keyless entry system), and dual-zone automatic climate control. Notably, the SX exclusively has a sport-style steering wheel and leather seats, front-seat ventilation, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Safety

For restraint and cushioning in the event of a car crash, the 2018 Kia Optima has dual front impact airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, dual front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags. The Optima also comes with four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system, a rearview camera, electronic stability and traction control, and hill start assist control. Advanced safety features such as rear parking sensors, blind spot detection, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard across the board.
